Sparta eyeing second gym
A major project is in the planning stages at the Sparta school district.
When the new high school was built several years ago, the smaller gymnasium was torn down, leaving just the larger gym to handle all high school events.
Now, the district plans to build a new 24,000 to 25,000-square-foot gym.
“It’s something we’ve been fighting with since we lost the small gym,” said school board President Corey Rheinecker. “We struggle with space for wrestling, for basketball, spring sports warming up in the winter, volleyball, cheerleading.”
The new gym will be connected to the school building and the existing gym, allowing students to move from the school to the gyms without having to exit the building, as they do now.
