Vietnam vet recalls memories of fallen friend

When the fog of war clears, leaving survivors to cope with the human toll of armed conflict, seldom do such tragedies result in a positive, if not happy, ending.
Jim Rowald, 70, of Sparta, is a Vietnam veteran who recently experienced an inspirational new chapter to what had been one of the darkest periods of his life.
Rowald was 17 when he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1968. By March of 1969, he had joined unit Delta 13 as its newest member in Vietnam. With the war raging all around them, the young Marines were stationed just below the demilitarized zone that separated the north from the south.
Rowald connected with a more experienced member of his unit, Bob Hensen.
